Sara is a smart, happy, and kind 10-year-old who loves spending time with her nephew, dancing, cheering on her school’s cheer squad, and drawing. She’s a Star Wars fanatic and has a passion for American History.
As the youngest of four siblings, with brothers and sisters 13, 18, and 20 years older, Sara was a joyful and healthy baby. However, at 10 months old, she was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma, a rare liver cancer. Her care teams decided that a liver transplant would give her the best chance for long-term recovery. While waiting for a new liver, Sara endured nine cycles of chemotherapy. She received a split liver transplant on November 24, 2015, at 18 months old and was declared No Evidence of Disease (NED). Now, she is nine years cancer-free, with a milestone 10-year celebration this November.
Sara faced challenges even after the transplant, including two episodes of rejection and a serious liver infection. Despite these hurdles, she remains resilient. Illness and infection can still pose risks to her liver, making her fight for good health a lifelong journey.
In 2025, Sara is in fantastic health with a happy liver and is living as normal a life as possible! And Sara’s Mom Jean let us know that Sara’s entire class is participating in “Ice Cream for Breakfast” this year, and they are bringing ice cream sandwiches!
