In 2020, four-year-old Danika was diagnosed with brain cancer. Then, in 2024, her big sister Matilda, at age 12, was diagnosed with a rare spinal cancer. In 2025, both continue to fight their cancers. And, through all this, their remarkable middle sister, 11-year-old Georgia, supports them both, often sharing moments over ice cream.
Before these diagnoses, Danika, Matilda, and Georgia were part of a simple family of five with their dog, living in the Australian countryside. While their family was aware of childhood cancer, they said they were, “not fully aware of what childhood cancer was, the types, the treatment and the devastation it causes.”
Now, the family is separated by a two-hour drive. Matilda is in Perth with her mom, undergoing treatment and intense rehabilitation after spinal surgery. Meanwhile, Danika is with her dad and sister Georgia, attending school and visiting Matilda on weekends. Danika continues to have brain scans every eight weeks and remains on targeted therapy treatment for 4.5 years.
Their dad hasn’t returned to work since Matilda’s diagnosis, but they have been fortunate to receive amazing support from family, friends, and the community. Georgia, wise beyond her years, provides incredible strength and support to her two sisters battling cancer.
